The plates in this book are taken from a variety of historical sources. The flowers are from Choix des Plus Belles Fleurs by Pierre-Joseph RedoutĆ©, published in 1827. The birds are from two sources: A History of the Birds of Europe (1871) by S.E. Dresser, and The Birds of America (1840-1844) by John T. Bowen and John James Audubon. For butterflies and fish, we turn to The NaturalistĆs Library, which was edited by the great Scottish naturalist Sir William Jardine (1800Ć1874). The illustrations were engraved by William Lizars (1788Ć1859).
