Whether it is to practice calligraphy or to make some sketches, brush tip pens are a very useful tool for those who want to handle ink and/or colour.

How do to choose a brush tip pen?

Three elements are required: the flexibility of the tip, the flow of the line and the fineness of the line.

Flexibility: The soft tips allow for more artistic and voluptuous elaborations, while the firmer ones offer precise control of handling.

Flow: The amount of ink depends, of course, on the flow released by the brush. Depending on the use of ink or colour, this criterion may work against you or in your favour. Be careful, if you handle a coloured ink, you will have to check whether it is waterproof.

Finnesse: Brush tip pens have several thicknesses. Fine tips are specific to elaborate work and thick tips are for larger work surfaces, but with less precise detail. The shape of their tip and their ink absorption capacity are a sublime substitute for unconventional calligraphy. You can make downstrokes (downwards) by exerting a little pressure on the tip, and by releasing the pressure, you will obtain a beautiful upstrokes (upwards). Brush tips have the advantage of having a line width that is easier to handle. For all these reasons the brush tip pen is getting really popular and it’s easier to practise all different strokes.
