• Drying agents for high-quality oil paints are compounds of metal salts that act as catalysts in the oxidation reaction of the oils.
• This product, which causes the colours to ‘dry’, is in fact a chemical reaction known as oxidation, a process by which the colours harden over time.
• No high-quality drying agent should be added in quantities exceeding 5 per cent of the paint.
• They are used by mixing them evenly with the colours.
• A simple way to incorporate drying agents and ensure you do not exceed the recommended dosage is to first mix them with decolourised linseed oil and then measure out this mixture to add to the paints.
• It is advisable to use them in very small quantities (2 to 4 drops in a 20ml tube) to avoid affecting the paint film.
