Each marker has an alphanumeric combination inscribed on the base of the cap or barrel that allows you to identify and differentiate each colour accurately. If you look at these numbers, the codings begin with one or two letters that indicate the type or family of colour. These are the initials of the colours by their English names: Blue, Red, Yellow, Green, Violet, Earth, etc. Next we find a number formed by two digits: the first one indicates the saturation of that colour and can go from 0 to 9. Between 0 and 3 are lights, the colours with values between 4 and 6 are intermediate or transitional and those with saturation values between 7 and 9 correspond to shadows. The second digit gives us a brightness value, with 0 being the lightest and 9 the darkest value. Finally, at the bottom we find the name given to the colour (Acid Yellow, Pure Pink, Chrome Orange etc.).
Understanding how the colour coding works will be very useful when it comes to making mixtures or gradients, to find those shades that best fit and complement each other.
