"Óscar Martínez's gaze always suggests new perspectives for observing works of art. The unusual relationships between different paintings that he weaves in this book turn meta-painting into a game of discovery of suggestive freshness".
Miguel Ángel Cajigal, El Barroquista
El eco pintado tells us about those special paintings in which other images are reproduced inside them. Paintings that contain drawings, posters, maps of distant continents, old photographs, other paintings or even mysterious mirrors. Paintings that, by including other images within the limits of their frames, enter the realm of what we know as "metapainting" and raise questions that go beyond the mere representation of reality.
Works by masters such as Gauguin and Picasso, Sofonisba Anguissola and Van Eyck, El Greco and Van Gogh, Vermeer and Velázquez, are presented in these pages, offering readers a different approach to questions which, a priori, may seem alien to the history of Western art, but which in reality are related in suggestive and unsuspected ways. Thus, in this narrative essay, artistic and pictorial themes are fused with others of more recent relevance - the climate emergency, lateral thinking, the dangers of vanity or the rise of medievalism - to show us how images created decades, or even centuries, ago are capable of connecting directly with contemporary thought and raising dilemmas that still challenge us today.
