Fundamental concepts of art history
Fundamental Concepts in the History of Art responds to the need to order and conceptualise the large amount of facts and data that arise in the study of art and its historical evolution. Through a rich comparative analysis of Renaissance and Baroque works, the Swiss critic Heinrich Wƶlfflin (1864-1945) arrived at the characterisation of the two styles by generalising their differences, which he formulated in pairs of opposing concepts: the linear versus the pictorial, the superficial versus the profound, the open versus the closed form, plurality versus unity, absolute clarity versus its attenuation as an attempt to concentrate and direct perception. These differences characterise both the personal style of an artist and an epochal style. Wƶlfflin thus attempts to establish the guidelines for a History of Art in which the genesis of the modern vision in all its manifestations - painting, sculpture, decoration and architecture - can be traced in its various phases. A classic book and of permanent use for the training that, with its analytical capacity, it will provide not only for those who study art, but also for those who simply want to learn to enjoy it.
