Hokusai. Beyond the Great Wave
An important publication on Hokusai's remarkable late work, incorporating new insights into the sublime paintings and prints that the artist created in the last thirty years of his life.
Hokusai's personal beliefs are examined here through the analysis of important brush paintings, drawings, woodcuts and illustrated books. The publication gives due attention to the contribution of his daughter, Eijo (Oi), also an accomplished artist. Hokusai continually explored the mutability and minutiae of natural phenomena in his art.
His later themes and styles were based on a mastery of eclectic Japanese, Chinese and European techniques, as well as an encyclopaedic knowledge of nature, myth and history.
