Painting into the light

  • Known for her techniques for painting light on water, Jenny Aitken offers a perfect guide for the intermediate artist on how to paint light outdoors and much more.
  • Learn how to successfully paint scenes that capture the magical effects of light from behind the subject.
  • Good backlit artworks (painting into the light) make the viewer squint and the light seems to shine from the canvas. They can seem like a kind of magic, with their diffused light and colour shining through. This book demystifies lighting in oils and provides a practical guide to the process, showing exactly how to create the illusion.
  • Inside, you'll find a wealth of information on simplifying, tonal control, capturing colour accurately, working indoors and outdoors, painting landscapes and still lifes, creating atmospheric depth and even mastering the illusion of space.
  • Through detailed step-by-step demonstrations and beautifully illustrated techniques, Jenny Aitken reveals how to infuse each painting with vibrant, realistic light.
  • A section on troubleshooting difficult paintings will show the reader that all paintings can be salvaged, but with an understanding of light and colour, they are much more likely to succeed the first time.
