Sumi-e: The mindful art of japanese ink painting.

  • Learn the engaging art of Japanese sumi-e painting, in which simple brushstrokes capture the essence of nature.
  • The Japanese art tradition of sumi-e uses brushes and ink washes to combine calligraphic lines with carefully considered white space. This mindful art form, which traditionally focuses on flowers and plants, has its roots in Zen Buddhism and seeks to capture the essence and natural vitality of a subject, rather than creating a realistic representation.
  • In this beautifully illustrated step-by-step guide, master calligrapher Akemi Lucas describes the equipment, brush position, ink mixing techniques and mindset needed to excel in this enchanting art form.
  • Ideal for beginners and experienced sumi-e artists alike, the projects begin with orchids, bamboo, chrysanthemums and plum blossoms (known as "The Four Gentlemen") and increase in complexity through fruit and flowers to water, insects and birds.
  • Many of the later projects also include important tips on background washes and other advanced techniques that will add sophistication to your work.
