Walton Ford 40th Edition

At first glance, the highly detailed large-scale watercolours of animals are reminiscent of the engravings of 19th century illustrators John James Audubon and Edward Lear.

A second, closer look, however, reveals a complex, disturbingly anthropomorphic universe, full of symbols, mischievous jokes and allusions to the opeRustic quality of traditional natural history.

In this visually stunning and sinister universe, beasts and birds are not mere aesthetic objects but rather dynamic actors in allegorical battles: a turkey crushing a small parrot with its claws, a menagerie of monkeys wreaking havoc on a formally arranged table, or a buffalo surrounded by a pack of bloodied white wolves.

The images, dazzling watercolours, are as impressive for their impeccable realism as for their complex content.

Originally available in a limited, signed edition, this updated volume by Pancha Tantra is the most comprehensive survey of Ford's work to date, including more than 20 new works by the artist.
