Embossing
Scrapbooking embossing or dry embossing consists of providing relief to our projects, adding dimension or depth to flat surfaces. It allows us to give a special finish and, to achieve it, there are several techniques.
More About Embossing, its techniques and materials!Embossing Technique
The embossing technique in scrapbooking is one of the most widely used, with two ways to do it: dry and heat.
Below, we explain the difference between both types of embossing and how to perform both techniques:

Dry embossing
The first is dry embossing, which consists of giving paper a different look by means of relief, achieving different textures. It can be done with embossing folders, where we can find everything from backgrounds, words, phrases or frames. For this, we will also need a die-cutting machine or pressing tool, such as the Sizzix Big Shot or the Mini Evolution by We R.
Another alternative for dry embossing is carried out with ball styluses manually. Both tools will allow us to create textures on paper, cardstock, metallic or embossing sheets, vellum paper... It is an ideal option to apply to card backgrounds, embellishments or albums.
Heat embossing
A little more elaborate is heat embossing, but its result is spectacular. With it, we will take our creativity to the highest level, bringing special effects to our projects and being able to make crafts with embossing on both wood and paper.
And how is this heat embossing technique carried out?
Just in three simple steps and with different tools:
Embossing Ink and Powder, plus heat gun
- First we will apply an embossing ink, which will be the clear āglueā to which the powders adhere, allowing them to melt with the desired design. Other slow-drying inks are also compatible, such as Distress Oxide inks, which, by combining them with clear powders, will achieve a shiny yet fascinating effect.
There are two formats of embossing ink: in an ink pad, being able to combine it with all types of stamps, whether acrylic or rubber, and also in marker pen format, with which we can draw our own designs or write freehand.
- Once the ink is applied with the chosen design, we need the embossing powders. They are essential to achieve this technique and there is a wide variety of colors and effects to create in our projects. We can find from the darkest shade in the color palette to the most striking, with a metallic effect like gold or silver, clear or iridescent to add a spectacular touch to our project.
- And finally, we need the heat gun or embossing tool. In this case, using a traditional hair dryer is not a good idea, as it will only blow air and scatter the powders all over our workspace. The heat gun applies direct heat, causing the powders to melt and revealing this magical finish.
