What is chipboard and what is used for? In this post, we will see the uses of this great ally of scrapbooking.
Some basic scrapbooking materials are used every day but do not receive much attention. And, precisely in this post, we want to give special attention to one of them: chipboard (cardboard for binding) which is so often used to make album covers and album structures.
A basic material that for many people is also an unknown item. We get a lot of questions about it, especially when you are just starting - it's amazing how something as simple as a few sheets of cardboard can do so much!
Chipboard is something we have all used the moment we started scrapbooking. It is a simple and affordable material that is mainly used to create structures.

Its most common use is to make up the covers of our albums and notebooks. To use the chipboard as a cover (and make it look beautiful, of course) cover it with patterned paper following a few simple steps. It is recommended to use scrapbooking paper with an approximate grammage of 100-120 gr. (It will be easier to manipulate it and make the folds to line the cardboard, especially if you are just starting with cardboard making.
How to cover the chipboard covers for binding?
- Cut the chipboard with the help of a cutter and a metal ruler (with a plastic ruler, we can damage the material and the tool). Keep in mind that cutting cardboard is not the same as cutting paper. Without moving the ruler from its original position, go over the cutter as many times as necessary.
- Cut the scrap paper with an extra 2 or 3 cm on each side. For example, if the cover of our album is going to measure 20x10cm, we will cut the paper to at least 26x16cm.
- Cut the corners of the paper so when you fold the paper inwards, you don't get a bulky crease in each corner. TIP: don't cut them very close to the edge, or the corner of the chipboard will be seen.
- Use a teflon bone folder (or the back of a pair of scissors) to fold the paper inwards so that it takes shape.
- Put double-sided tape on the four edges (you can use another adhesive if you want) and stick them to the inside of the cardboard. Stretch the paper very well to avoid wrinkles.
- Cut a piece of paper slightly smaller than the front cover and stick it with double-sided tape, white glue, tacky glue... whatever you like!Ā TIP: If you want to give a vintage touch to your project, ink the edges of the covers with Distress Ink.
Now, you can bind them however you want. Let's take a look at some ideas!
Spiral binding

This type of wire-os can be used with either the Cinch or the Zutter. Either of these binding machines allows us to make holes and press the rings to close the spirals. They both cut the chipboard perfectly!
Ring binding
Just by using the Crop-A-Dile we can make a nice ring binder. The Crop-A-Dile cuts easily through the chipboard, but keep in mind that other punching machines can't cut through such dense material. You can use rings or other alternatives such as ribbons, pieces of string to give it a rustic and natural touch, etc.
Binding with spine
Spine binding, or bookbinding, looks very professional. You need to create a spine that you add to your original structure with the covers before lining it with paper. It is a very elegant binding that you can use for the outside of albums, diaries, signature books, etc., and combine with other types of interior bindings (spiral, fan, folding, etc.).
If you leave the cardboard visible...
Here's another idea! You can choose to leave the chipboard visible by decorating only part of the surface, without covering it completely with paper. This option gives it a more rustic but modern touch at the same time, the kraft colour of the cardboard is trendy!

To decorate, you can use doilies, die-cuts, alphabets, etc. As you know, less is often more and natural cardboard is becoming more and more popular.

From these basic concepts, you can play with cardboard to create different shapes (with curved and wavy forms, in the shape of a little house, etc.). And also, of course, you can use cardboard for binding in more daring creations: how about a cover for your tablet, or hearts or watermarks to decorate your scrapbooking pages? You can then personalize them by lining them with paper, paints, sprays...
And you, what are the uses you give to chipboard?
