The Spellbinders Glimmer Hot Foil System is one of those products that is here to stay. It is revolutionising the world of scrapbooking. It allows you to apply embossed foil to all your projects. Do you know how this incredible tool works? In this post you'll find out everything you need to know about this tool. So, let’s talk about the Glimmer Hot Foil System is and what it is used for. It's a great addition to your favourite die-cutting machine and a must-have among your scrapbooking tools, especially if you love to use foil in your projects.

What is the Glimmer Hot Foil System for?

The Glimmer Hot Foil System is a machine that uses heat to apply foil to your projects, creating a shimmering effect with a slight relief that is compatible with most punching tools, such as the Big Shot.   With it, you can apply hot foil by embossing, that's why you need a die cutting machine to use it.   You can make the sandwich with the tool and the dies to apply the foil, and then use it with your die-cutting machine. The effect is very professional as the die allows you to create an embossed effect on the paper. You can apply foil to a variety of surfaces such as watercolour paper, cardboard, paper, leather, ribbon, glitter paper, inlay, yupo paper or chipboard.

Features of the Glimmer Hot Foil System

This tool comes from the British brand Spellbinders, a real reference in the world of crafts and scrapbooking in particular. It has a simple and comfortable design, with a handle at the top so that you can easily remove it and transfer the plate with the sandwich to the Big Shot without burning yourself. All the necessary materials are included:

  • Thin heat resistant acrylic wedge
  • Silicone cooling pad
  • Magnetic pick-up tool
  • 2 dies
  • 2 foil rolls
  • Instructions manual
As you can see, the machine comes super-complete, with all the necessary materials to start creating as soon as you receive it.

How to make the Glimmer Hot Foil System sandwich?

If you want to become an expert in this tool, you must learn how to make a sandwich to get the best results!   First you need to plug in the platform so that it heats up, when the green light comes on you can use it. When it is hot, place the die on the platform, being careful not to burn yourself. Place the foil with the coloured side down and place the surface you want to emboss on top. For example, a card. Press the 'Timer' button. When it stops flashing, place the two sheets, the heat resistant methacrylate and the heat resistant acrylic, and transfer the sandwich to the punch. Pass it through the rollers in the normal way. Place the sandwich back on the Glimmer. Remove the plates, remove the foil and our creation is finished.   The result is a design with foil, applied with heat, and a relief or embossing on the material you're using, thanks to the embossing in our die-cutter. In other words, you are not just applying foil, you are creating a project with embossed details that give the project a very professional finish. It is ideal for making wedding invitations, cards and all kinds of projects. It gives a lot of possibilities and has a very delicate finish.   As you may have seen on social media, the Glimmer is making a big comeback in the industry, it's incredible how many things you can do with it! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T_hkFgLaLdM

Which dies can it be used with?

To work with the Glimmer, you will need special dies designed for this tool, but if you have your old Big Shot dies and want to give them a second life, you can use them too.   There are a few differences, however, so let's explain them, so you can consider which dies to use, as the Glimmer dies will give you much more detailed and professional results.Ā    If you use standard punches, the foil will only adhere to the surface of the design that you want to "cut" through the paper. That is, on an outline.   The dies designed for the Glimmer allow you to apply the foil to much larger areas as they are specially designed for this purpose. Many of these dies come in sets of two, one to apply the foil to a design and another to cut out the outline, allowing us to make pieces and die-cuts with embossing.   An example of this type of die is shown in the picture below.   The effect will be different with your usual cutting dies, but we find that we can still create very original projects. Plus, it's a great way to give a second use to our entire die collection.

Which die-cutting machines is it compatible with?

As we have already told you, the Glimmer Hot Foil needs a die-cutting machine to be used correctly, as the sandwich must be passed through the machine so that the foil adheres correctly to our materials. Here are some of the die-cutting machines compatible with this tool:   - Sizzix Big Shot This is one of the most famous die cutters. Surely you already have it in your scraproom and now, with the Glimmer, you can give it a new use.   - Spellbinders Platinum This is the Spellbinders die cutter, the same brand as the Glimmer, so you can use it without any problem to make these foil designs.   - We R Makers, Revolution This is one of the most popular machines for scrapbookers. It is available in several sizes, but to work with the Glimmer you will need the large format.   And you, did you already know how this tool works? Tell us in the comments, we'll read you!
