But beneath that postcard layer there are still hidden traces, of the Arab past that refuses to disappear to the rails of trams and the surprising journeys of water. And then there are places that remain a secret, such as the hidden viewpoint of El Retiro, sumptuous hidden palaces and terraces with unexpected views. In my walks around the city, I have come up with all kinds of questions: What is the oldest building in Madrid? What does Saint Valentine's Day have to do with the capital? Is there a place where you can buy books by weight? What is behind the façade of number 13 Huertas Street? What are those rails that remain on the corner of Atocha Street? This book aims to answer these and other questions and to trace a route full of history, curiosities, nuances and details through the unique and surprising Madrid that makes me fall in love with it every day.
