• Drying agents for high-quality oil paints are compounds of metal salts which act as catalysts in the oxidation reaction of the oils.
• This product, which causes the paints to ‘dry’, is in fact an oxidative chemical reaction – a process through which the paints harden over time.
• No high-quality drying agent should be added in quantities exceeding 5 per cent of the paint.
• They should be mixed evenly into the paints.
• A simple way to incorporate drying agents and ensure you do not exceed the recommended amount is to first mix them with decolourised linseed oil and then add this mixture to the paints.
• It is advisable to use them in very small quantities (2 to 4 drops in a 20ml tube) to avoid affecting the paint layer.
